Laundry Item Review: Downy Unstopables in Lush

I was going through Target one day and I noticed a new laundry product by Downy called Unstopables.  I picked up the bottle and gave the purple "lush" scent a quick squeeze and fell in love with the scent.  I thought, why not?  I've been kind of disappointed in the washers at our laundromat.  I don't know if it is the soft water they use, but I notice that our laundry never has that "clean" scent.  In fact, it just has a lack of scent.  I know the laundry is clean, but it just doesn't retain any of the scent of either the detergent, softener OR the dryer sheets.  This little fact came apparent after washing our clothes at my mother-in-law's in Kansas.  Same type of front loading machine, normal measurements of detergent and fabric softener.  The only difference is our laundry continued to smell clean for a week.  The minute we washed them the following week.  Nothing.  No scent.

Unstopables is described as a "wash scent booster".  It works with all your laundry products and in any kind of washer.  They are scent beads that dissolve in the wash.  Please feel free to go to Downy's UNSTOPABLE page for more product information.

The verdict:  I will continue to purchase this product as long as they make it.  I am that impressed with it.  All of our clothes are this soft lavender scent.  It has been two days since I've done the laundry and it is still going.  It is not an strong perfume scent, at least in my opinion.  I used half a lid of the pearls in a three load front load HE washer.  It was plenty, so I would start with just a little bit.  A little of these pearls go a long way.  I recommend this product if you're in the same boat as I am.  I was tired of not smelling any remnants of the laundry soap, softener or dryer sheets.  I needed some scent and these do the job.  I haven't has any skin reactions or staining occur from this product, although other users have complained about staining.  My opinion is people tend to pack their washer machines TOO full.  Especially front loaders.  I see it all the time at the laundromat.  I suspect if you do not give your washer ample room to agitate, the pearls might not dissolve as intended.  Another complaint is the price.  A bottle of Unstopable will run you between $6 and $7.  Is this expensive?  Yes, for a non-mandatory product, it is expensive.  Is it worth it?  I think if you are looking for a clean scent like I was, it is.  If your machine is allowing your detergents and softeners to maintain its scent on your clothing, then probably not.  I figured at the rate I am using this product, I will probably use a bottle a month.  I'm okay with that as long as my clothes continue to have SOME KIND of scent.  Or family has no allergies.  Obviously, I would not recommend this product to sensitive skin or if you have small children with sensitive skin without testing it first.

  1. I need you to do a review of wool dryer balls :) lol. I have been wanting to try them - they supposedly cut your drying time down (by absorbing moisture - makes sense) and they act as a fabric softener and keep clothes from getting so much static. I use to use dryer sheets but they leave a residue on your clothing and since we use cloth diapers now, we can't have that - it causes the diapers not to absorb. Anwyay, just an idea if you want to try another new laundry product. They are all over etsy. :)
